What is the nature of the human will?

SPOTLIGHT: ROMANS 9:16 – “It is NOT of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.”

” What is the human will? Is it a self-determining agent, or is it determined by something else? Is it sovereign or servant? Is the will superior to every other faculty of our being so that it governs them, or is it moved by their impulses and subject to their pleasure? Does the will rule the mind, or does the mind control the will? Is the will free to do as it pleases, or is it under the necessity of rendering obedience to something outside of itself? Does the will stand apart from the other great faculties or powers of the soul, a man within a man, who can reverse the man and fly against the man and split him into segments, as a glass snake breaks in pieces? Or, is the will connected with the other faculties, as the TAIL of the serpent is with his body and that again with his head, so that where the head goes, the whole creature goes, and, as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he? Is it, the will, the tail, wags the dog? or the dog wags the tail? Is the will the first and chief thing in the man, or is it the last thing —- to be kept subordinate, and in its place, beneath the other faculties? and, is the true philosophy of moral action and its process that of Genesis 3:6: “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food (sense,-perception, intelligence), and a tree to be desired (affections), she took and ate thereof (the will).” – A.W. Pink from the book “The Sovereignty of God”!

Consider this fact; the will is the faculty of choice, the immediate cause of all action. It is the refusal of one thing and the acceptance of another thing. In every act we do, there is a preference for one thing over and against another thing. Something ALWAYS presents itself to the “will” or the “will” does not function. It is NOT the WILL which presents itself to the person and then some desire arises to make a choice about! It is just the opposite.

Based on that last thought, one finds that the will is always in bondage to the desire or choice, to make it function and become a reality or action. So, basically think of it this way; your desires, wants, preferences, senses, etc., and based on how much the item is desired or wanted, is what motivates or puts in operation the “will”!

Based on that knowledge we can say; mankind chooses that which is according to their nature, and therefore before they WILL ever choose or prefer that which is Divine, and Spiritual. A NEW NATURE must be imparted to them; in other words, they MUST be born again. They must receive a greater ability and desire which offsets the old nature which has been in control before the will can function in the spiritual realm concerning God and acceptance of the Gospel of Grace. God is the first cause producing the ability of the person (the sinner who is bound by his old nature and in chains of darkness spiritually) to have faith and repentance and trust in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of his or her soul.

This subject is a much broader subject which one can study and find so much existing that substantiates my original thesis which is from the Holy Scriptures. So I recommend purchasing and studying this subject not only from the Scripture verses which speak of it, our final authority, but helps from another saint of God who wrote and pulled out the words from all of the scriptures which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that mankind does not have a FREE WILL and in fact there is no such thing as a Free Will.

God CANNOT SIN because HE is the antithesis of sin. Something always controls the will for it to operate. God Himself is totally free, but even HE is a Person and Being who is controlled totally by His character and His actual being as God which means it is impossible for HIM to sin since HE is absolutely pure, holy, sacred, all powerful and all knowing and exists without any flaw or anything other than LOVE and all of His other attributes powerfully controlling His entire being. So, when HE wills it is always going to be right and just and never wrong.
