WHAT ABOUT SIN AND BELIEVERS? CAN A BELIEVER SIN AND FALL AWAY AND NEVER BE SAVED?
I. QUESTIONS EXAMINED
HEBREWS 6: 4-6;
“For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.”
This could be a frightening passage if we misinterpret it. Many use this verse to teach Christians can fall from grace and be lost. But what do these passages of scripture mean?
The message was written with the Jewish believers in view because they were failing to understand the basic teachings of Christ on the matter. They needed a clear presenation of the Gospel! Hebrews 5:12 reflects what they need to do;
“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.”
Paul the Apostle, goes on in the book of Hebrews sharing this with them in Hebrews 6: 1-2.
“Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.”
Is it right to think that all of the Old Testament writings are now not to be followed such as the ceremonial washings, and the laying on of hands, etc.? Some were going back to the O.T. law keeping and had abandoned the Gospel message so Paul contnues in Hebrews 6: 4-6 in this way;
“For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.”
These folks had not responded correctly to the Gospel and had tasted the good word but had not swallowed and digested it at all. Many had refused to repent from the dead works of the Temple and turn to faith in Christ Jesus ALONE for their salvation.
No one today or in that day could expect to be saved by God’s grace through faith and so if they did that there is NO PLACE FOR them to go and find forgiveness and new life. Once they reject Him forgiveness and life can’t be found anywhere else.
This really is not to a Christian, a born again person losing salvation, but it is about a Hebrew (Jew) who is flirting with the Gospel
message but still rejecting its Grace message. The fact is there is NO other name given among men whereby one may be saved except through the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Cross work and Resurrection. Bulls and Goats won’t cut it!
One may taste a little bit of something but to really drink it all in and consume the matter means salvation has not taken place.
Hebrews 6: 7-8 states: “For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.”
Jesus’s Parable of the Sower is similar. Matthew 13 speaks of this parable. Some seed fell on good soil, other fell on bad soil. Some take in the message of the Gospel by Grace, and some do not get drawn and brought into the folks of Christ but rather reject it. Those who reject are like thorns and thistles which are thrown into the fire.
Paul goes on in his dialog and message that real true called and chosen ones will not do the falling away, but rather, continue on and drink and digest the Gospel word and be saved. He states in Hebrews 6:9, “But, BELOVED, we are convinced of BETTER THINGS concerning you, and things that ACCOMPANY Salvation., though we are speaking in this way.”
So Hebrews 6 is not about believers losing salvation, but it was a message to Jews who still had not come to Christ ALONE for salvation. They were not born again yet.
SO THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS, YOU CAN REST ASSURED YOUR SALVATION IS REAL IF YOU HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT, AND YOU HAVE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST IN YOUR HEART, AND YOU HAVE TRULY REPENTED AND TRUSTED IN HIM ALONE AND NOT GOOD WORKS OR ANYTHING ELSE. HE IS THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER (PERFECTER) OF OUR FAITH. HE WILL KEEP US FROM FALLING AND PRESENT US FAULTLESS BEFORE HIS PRESENCE WITH EXCEEDING JOY. SO WE LOOK ONLY TO HIM!
