Is this statement true? Is it Biblical? Did God really teach this? The statement I speak of is this: “You are sometimes in the Spirit and sometimes in the flesh”!
Let’s examine this statement and see what God has to say about it all! Notice this scripture verse:
Romans 8:9 – “However, you are NOT IN THE FLESH BUT IN THE SPIRIT, IF INDEED THE SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU! But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.”
Should just end it there, for that is the total answer, period! The Statement that is currently being taught all over the kingdom of God today is wrong! It is amazing how folks can’t understand clear words and very easy to read words, from scripture. But, spiritual truths are not understand by the lost, that is for sure, and weaker brothers and sisters in the faith, have to learn to undo a lot of the things they get today from all false and misleading sources, for we depend exclusively on the very word of God in scriptures.
I. DO WE SOMETIMES THINK WE ARE IN THE FLESH AND SOMETIMES IN THE SPIRIT?
What is taking place in the scripture is that God is showing us the difference between a lost person and a saved person. A lost person is always in the FLESH dead to God and spiritual matters, but alive to sin totally. All that a lost person does is sin! He or she is in a State of Sin! No holy acts, no righteousness, no real good deeds valued by God as good, for all he or she does is for self and sin. David, in the Psalms stated we are all born in sin, that is conceived in sin. Sin is a state of being and a force that dwells in us all which is evil. It controls our very nature and desires, until Christ Jesus unshackles us and frees us from the Flesh (sarx in Greek or Sin)! We are in Freedom and let us not use our freedom by returning to the flesh (sin) allowing it to function, but rather, mortifying it, putting it to death and walking in the Spirit Who is in us and we are in Him!
Sinners set their minds and hearts on fleshly carnal things all the time. It is 24/7! All self centered. Not God centered ever! All have sinned and all have fallen short of the glory of God.
Believers however are those who set their minds upon things of the Spirit. Notice Romans 8:5:
“For those who ARE according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who ARE according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”
These words describe our identity and our position right now this very minute. We are one or the other. Notice what walking and being in the Spirit looks like in Romans 8: 8-9;
“…and those who are in the flesh CANNOT PLEASE GOD. However, YOU ARE NOT IN THE FLESH BUT IN THE SPIRIT, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if ANYONE does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does NOT BELONG TO HIM.”
There is no “in and out” deal going on here. We are one or the other! No middle ground! Our LOCATION is in the Spirit, and I might say also, in the Lord Jesus and in the Father also.
LET’S NOTE HOW THIS DESCRIPTION IS REVEALED TO US IN THE BIBLE:
BEFORE SALVATION: AFTER SALVATION: SCRIPTURES:
In the flesh In the Spirit Romans 8:9
In Adam In Christ 1 Cor. 15:22
A slave to sin A slave to righteousness Rom. 6:17
In dark kingdom In His kingdom of light Col. 1:13
Dead to God Alive to God Eph. 2:1,5
Romans 8:6 reads, “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is LIFE and PEACE.”
The reality about this is we are aliens in this world and on this planet now. The fleshly lusts war against us, not with us – 1 Peter 2:11. Our old man, the flesh, is still there in the flesh and bones, and it is called the flesh and is carnal. Sin dwells there but NOT in the NEW BORN creation or New Person we are due to regeneration and the new birth, for we are now in Christ Jesus and we have the imputed righteousness and imparted righteousness also, from Christ Who is holiness and is pure and holy and sanctified now, making us one and the same!
IN CHRIST and IN GOD the Father and IN the HOLY SPIRIT. That does NOT mean we are God or Divine in that sense, but it does mean we are new creations and sons of God and children of God, a new person and not what we were before sinners, but rather, saints! The new person created is now struggling and fighting sin, Satan and the world system, and when temptations come to our normal pure and natural human desires, (our humanness), we, the new person, fight to mortify the temptations allurements and through the Holy Spirit in us we put to death those desires.
If we fail to do so, then that SIN in our body called the Flesh (Sin or Sarx) expresses itself in our physical body becoming sinful acts, but that does not impune, or contaminate or make us fall and become lost sinners, and wicked, foul, detestable impure and unholy individuals again need to be reborn!
God forbid! We are still righteous, pure, holy, chosen ones of Christ and IN HIM and as safe as we would ever be from condemnation and wrath, but our body which houses this thing called sin does the sinning and is considered still fallen and unregenerate. We wait for this wonderful resurrection or translation or being able to leave this body and be with Christ longing for the NEW BODY without sin to envelope us and we live in that new spiritual body created by our Lord which will be in the future.
Dear fellow saints, we must get this down well. If not, we become confused, we begin to speak as if we are still like we were prior to our salvation making us think we are enemies of our Lord, even perhaps not even being saved, having huge guilt problems, and our minds and hearts full of many false doctrines produced in fact by the voice of our enemy who teaches us such! Certainly, we agree the facts of life, and the scriptures do teach we can allow sin to take place in our bodies after we have been saved or born again (regenerated). But the FACT is we have now a duality existing.
A new born child of God, pure, holy, sanctified, make alive spiritually by the Power which resurrected Christ Jesus from the dead, and God is in us and abides in us and we in Him! So we (the new born) sons and daughters of God and Christ are kept from sin, but the Sarx (sin) in the flesh does exert itself in our bodies. In that sense (since we are all one entity (body, soul, spirit, and flesh and bones) do have sin in us, but NOT IN THE NEW PERSON WHO IS IN THE SEED (CHRIST JESUS) and IN THE SPIRIT OF GOD. Anything else produces a very wrong conception i.e., making us fall out of Christ and out of God, which would mean being lost and under bondage of sin again, or perhaps some thought of a hybrid situation making even God sin and Christ sin because we are absolutely IN HIM and such sin would implicate HIM because HE said we are IN HIM and He in us and making us Holy, Pure and sanctified individuals.
Gets real messy when one does this. We seek then to wallow around in our sins all the time analyzing and examining all the time sin and its components, when we should be looking unto Jesus the author and perfecter of our faith and looking for that City of God and majoring on Love and serving Jesus.
II. NO GOING IN THE DOOR AND OUT OF THE DOOR! OUR REDEEMED SOUL/SPIRIT AND HEART ARE NOW REDEEMED AND HOLY, BUT THE FLESH IS STILL DEAD IN SIN UNTIL IT GOES BACK TO THE DUST AND IS RESURRECTED OR TRANSLATED IF CHRIST COMES WHILE WE ARE STILL ALIVE ON EARTH.
This is how we are now in our bodies here on planet earth. We have conflict and struggles because of that diametrically different state or identity we have. The flesh struggles against the spirit and the spirit against the flesh.
That is why Paul could say in Romans 8 when he desires to do right sin is always present and he doesn’t always conduct right and holy things, but he said it was SIN doing it and not him because He was a lover of God and a redeemed soul and spirit living in that Eternal Life posture right then at those moments in time.
God was in him and he was in God. God cannot sin and will not allow His new creature be tainted with sin either in that sense. But we are allowed to see and in our mind allow sin to operate from time to time in the flesh which is still unregenerated. Our new man is regenerated and that means has Eternal Everlasting HOLY life forever.
A prayer: Father, thank you for saving me, changing me, making me a new creature or creation and thank you for my new identity and new spiritual location in your Spirit. Thank you that you will NEVER leave me, nor I leave you, for you KEEP me from falling and will present me faultless before your throne and even now our Lord Jesus you are my advocate before the Father regarding your atonement for all of my past, present and future sins committed in my body. Remind me to set my MIND on YOUR Spirit, because I have new life and a totally new identity now in Your Spirit. In Jesus Name, Amen!
