ALL OF JESUS’S TEACHINGS APPLY DIRECTLY TO BELIEVERS
“If your right eye makes you stumble, TEAR IT OUT and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. If your right hand makes you stumble, CUT IT OFF and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into HELL.” Matthew 5:29-30
The Sermon on the Mount many times is taught as a word for all N.C., body of Christ believers to follow as law. If we pause for a moment, read it slowly and think about it, we will discover our Lord is speaking to people things that no person, whether lost or saved would ever be able to do or would do. It is in fact impossible. Let’s consider this more clearly and carefully!
In Matthew 5, after the Beatitudes (“blessed are those”), our Lord moves to a new subject in verse 17 where we read: “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill” (v. 17). From there, Jesus delivers His words concerning the true standard of the Law.
SCRIPTURE TEACHES US THAT THE LAW WILL ALWAYS EXIST.
First, Jesus He states that the Law is permanent. He tells His audiance that none of the Law will pass away until Heaven and Earth pass away. This means that not any of it is done away with and all of it is important.
What do we as saints do with this statement since we are under the New Covenant? What HE is saying is this; the Law still exists today and tomorrow, and the future and it won’t go away! But, having said that, we must remember our relationship to the Law is what changes.
At salvation, we die to the Law (Romans 7:4; Galatians 2:19, Galatians 3:24-25; 1 Timothy 1:8-10). ………………………….
REMEMBER THAT NO PERSON CAN KEEP THE LAW PERFECTLY!
…….ONE CAN’T PICK AND CHOOSE THINGS IN THE LAW, IT IS A FULL UNIT AND ALLOWS NO CHERRY PICKING: (Galatians 3:10). One has to keep it perfectly, all of it, or they fail the test. You can’t get a B+ but rather have to get an A on the test. If we fail and wear wool with linen, if we eat pork, if we do not keep the Sabbath, all are judged the same, we are like breakers of the entire 613 laws or regulations. (James 2:10.)
ACTUALLY CHRIST GOES EVEN FURTHER MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT.
Jesus goes on to make the Law’s standard HARDER: “For I say to you that UNLESS YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS SURPASSES THAT OF THE SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, YOU WILL NOT ENTER THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.” (V.20)……….. that was the purpose of the Law; to shut up unbelievers as they recognize their sins, their spiritual death, and their need for new life (Romans 3:19-20). …………….
THE ENTIRE MESSAGE CALLED THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT WAS TO THE JEWISH NATION.
MATTHEW 5: 17-38 – READ THE ENTIRE CHAPTERS
We believers — under the New Covenant—are dead to the Law (Romans 7:4; Galatians 2:19) and not under the Law (Romans 6:14. Christ is the END of the Law for all those who believer (Romans 10:4). ………
The purpose and plain message can also be shown by asking certain questions:
- Are we to cut off body parts and pluck out our eyes?
- Are we affiliated with the Sanhedrin?
- Are saints to fear being cast into Hell?
- Are there any more animal sacrifices on alters?
- Do we have to live up to higher standards than the Pharisee’s concerning the Law?
- THE ANSWER TO THESE IS ABSOLUTELY NO!
