The Blood of Christ is an essential doctrine of the word of God. God established “blood” as an essential part of the atoning work of Christ. Not just His death, but also the “shedding of His blood”! In the Old Testament the shedding of an animal’s (Lambs) blood was a picture or symbol of Christ and His blood. The blood of animals never took away sin, but God looked down on the sacrifice and the sprinkling of the animal’s blood, as symbolic of the blood of Jesus, which was to be shed for the atonement and remission of His people’s sins in terms of the future on earth when Christ came. So, Christ’s actual blood was and is essential in the redemption of His people.
Many verses tell us this, such as: Mark 14:24; John 6:53; Acts 15:20; 1 Cor. 11:25; Eph. 1:17; Eph. 2:13; Hebrews 9:7; Hebrews 9:20; 1 Peter 1:2; 1 Peter 1:19; 1 John 1:7; Rev. 1:5; Rev. 7:14; Revelation 5:9; Rev. 12:11 and Rev. 19:13. There are many, many more.
God created Jesus, the God-Man, in the womb of the Virgin Mary. Why did God use a virgin for the birth of His Son? Why didn’t God bring Jesus forth through normal sexual relations between Joseph and Mary? Why not allow Jesus to be conceived and born like Samson, or Isaac? In other words, like normal people, but specially blessed by God. I want you to consider the following propositions as an answer to the “why”:
GOD’S SON WAS BORN OF A VIRGIN! WHY?
In the Garden of Eden, Adam transgressed God’s law and fell into sin. His disobedience brought about the curse of spiritual and physical death. The spiritual was immediate; their relationship and intimacy with God was broken. Also, the physical process of death immediately began. Their bodies began to decay. Sin was in Adam’s blood!
If sin were not in the body (that is sin with its concomitant death), the body would never die. The reason the body lives is that blood flows through all of its veins, arteries and capallaries. We must remember Adam and Eve didn’t have diseases, no wrinkles, no joint aches, and no anticipation of death. Death comes only because of SIN and there was no sin in their bodies.
Now, Jesus Christ came down from heaven and took upon Himself human flesh. He had a body, blood and bones, yet without any stain of sin, which means no death molecule was in his body. Body and bones are matter and matter is not sinful in and of itself, as the Gnostics teach. It is the SIN in the very core of a lost person (heart, soul, spirit and mind), and in their body that does the damage. Sin brings death and decay.
Jesus was without sin. He never suffered illness or any malfunctioning of the body and bones. Yet, He did allow Himself to feel weakness as He experienced hunger and allowed Himself to be tired and need rest! But those are not sins or sinful actions, nor are they results of sin, but part of normal life. Jesus became human, so He could identify with human beings in all areas. On the cross, He allowed God to place His people’s sins on Him in order that He could pay the price for their redemption. He willingly did this. No person could take His life without His permission.
Christ was a miracle child and God Himself was the Father. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy – the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).
So, from all of this we can conclude that the curse of sin is transmitted through the “bloodline” of Adam. God held Adam responsible for the fall of mankind. So, this transmission of sin flows through Adam down through time in all of us. The seed was not Adam’s, by way of Joseph, but a union of the seed of God and the egg of woman making a new special hypostatic union. Jesus was fully God and fully man. His blood was pure, holy, and without sin in it. His blood was a perfectly acceptable sacrifice.
Jesus purposefully died – not because of the beatings, or the nails driven into his hands and the spear in his side, not because of the “blood flowing from the wounds,” but because HE PURPOSEFULLY GAVE UP HIS SPIRIT AND DIED, ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD. He had to allow His Spirit to leave the body, which of course, He could have healed all of the wounds but chose not to until He died, and then rose up from the grave.
The good news is the Father laid on Jesus the iniquity of us all. As the wrath of God was poured down on the Son, He paid the penalty for our sins, though the shedding of His blood and death. It was a blood atonement (covering) and a propitiation (satisfaction) to the Father fully satisfying His justice.
And so, when His blood was shed, His body broken, the sins of His people atoned for (a supernatural mysterious act), and He suffered appropriately and fully, then and only then, did He give up His spirit. At the Throne of God the Father, Jesus in the Spirit brought His sacrifice and blood to the REAL ALTER in heaven and sprinkled it on the Mercy Seat.
We must remember, the physical things in the Jewish Temple were symbolic of the real ones in heaven and so Christ presented Himself and His blood in the Temple of God in the heavenly place! He actually did what each item of the physical Temple that was required was actually done in Heaven! That is what was necessary for you and me to be forgiven.
Believe and be blessed!
