Subject: Truth – Is it out there?
One of the popular TV shows has a slogan that says, “The truth is out there”!
Absolute truth is certainly revealed to mankind from heaven!
First, God has stated that the “Heavens declare the glory of God and firmament shows His handiwork”! He has even stated He has written into the hearts of mankind certain truths regarding His law which can be observed in man as his conscience.
Of course, sin has brought his conscience into a state of instability, but there is enough of God’s law imprinted upon man’s conscience that he knows certain eternal truths. For instance, a recent murdering despot on a Greyhound Bus displayed a totally depraved conscience, but yet he is reported to have said that “he should be also killed”! He certainly displayed God’s law about shedding man’s blood.
GOD SPEAKS THROUGH PROPHETS DOWN THROUGH THE AGES!
Also, God spoke to mankind through the prophets down through the ages and they wrote those words down for mankind to read, so they can discern what God has said! Then, God presents the ultimate truth – Jesus the Christ and our Lord in flesh. He said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”! He is truth! If you know Christ you know truth! For He leads those who believe and trust in Him to all the truth they need about knowing God the Father, Jesus Christ, eternal life, and forgiveness of sins, but also the truth they need to know about all other important issues.
SYNERGISTIC PROBLEM EXISTS IN THE WORLD AND EVEN IN CHURCHES
Today’s society has a mind set which is against the truth. A new (not really) movement exists in the evangelical churches called the emergent church movement. They don’t stand for absolute truth revealed in the word of God, but rather, take a stand for “we are not able to really know ALL truth”! Certainly not a Biblical precept as taught in the written word of truth the Bible! God provides to His people ALL the needed Truth we have a need to know as humans!
HOW DO WE RESPOND TO THE TRUTH WHEN IT IS GIVEN?
When you hear someone say after scripture has been read in a Bible study or from the pulpit, “What does that mean to you?” Recognize that is a form of radical unbelief! The question should always be “What has God said?” Truth is NEVER determined by looking at God’s Word and asking “What does this mean to me?” When someone asks that, you need to ask, “What did the Bible MEAN BEFORE you were born?” What does GOD mean by what He says?” Those are the proper questions.
Truth and meaning are not determined by our intuitions, experiences or desires at all! The true meaning of Scripture has already been determined and fixed by the mind of God! The work of an interpreter or teacher or preacher or student of the word is, to discern THAT meaning. Proper interpretation must precede application.
ONLY ONE INTERPRETATION EXISTS!
Remember, there is ONLY ONE interpretation of any scripture, but there can be many applications. Study His Word, so that God will reveal the truths from His word to your heart that you may grow in the knowledge of Him and give Him glory! Paul the Apostle told Timothy to Rightly divide the word of Truth! A heavier study of the New Covenant will reveal to us that the final word on any given issue or concern about what God is teaching is found in “using the New Covenant Words of the Scripture to interpret the Old Covenant words!
We never allow OT words to override the NT words of scripture, for even as Jesus stated during His earthly ministry, “You have heard it said, ……..BUT IT say unto you……” He is the final interpreter of the word of God! He is the word of God Himself! Good examples of this hermeneutics found in Hebrews when we can read that the words of both Abraham and David, spoken in the O.T., are found to have a much more fuller meaning and expression of truth as God gives us what they ACTUALLY were talking about as He unfolds that in the NT book of Hebrews! Big difference is there because if we had only Abrahams words left we would come to a different conclusion about what Abraham or David were saying, if it had not been for further Revelation in the book of Hebrews!
